I agree that there are people extremely similar to kilgrave irl, but considering that his powers allow him to instantly convince people to commit mass suicide, murder their own loved ones, or commit any other sort of crime when they otherwise never would, I would say that they make him at least a little more horrible (and, sure, there are people irl who are able to manipulate others into doing horrible without mind control powers but not everyone is susceptible to that kind of thing and kilgrave can make anyone do it)
