If you're not comfortable posting where you live now, if you're willing to PM me, I'd be interested in hearing wear your live? Just to see if you live near me, to give you my perspective, maybe, if that helps?

(I hope I worded this well lol. >_>;;)

It's in California. Is that anywhere near you?

We're neighbors! I'm in Oregon. :) Though, culturally, it'd depend on where in Cali you're from, as where I'm from is most similar to norther California.

(Not that that's too surprising, lol, given proximity).

I'm in southern California... so pretty far, I'd think? Though everything in the US is so far from each other.

I've been getting differing opinions from different people here, so I'll probably figure out the hyped-up fear vs. reality after a while. But so far I'm trying to be careful, and paying attention to warnings, and hopefully that'll be enough.

Yeah. I visited once, and it was a 20 (?) hour bus ride. :(

And you're right about the distance thing. Sometimes I wonder how the world would look if, instead of states, the US was a bunch of countries, like Europe. It'd be interesting, that's for sure.

And yeah, southern California does have a bit of a reputation, even where I am, though how much of it is deserved is debatable. On the plus side, if you're near LA, they have some really cool food trucks!

...But yeah, I'll admit, that's not a place I'd be comfortable roaming alone at night, which I know isn't really helpful, sorry. ^^; Are you there long term? Or just visiting?

Also, and I'm sorry if this is out of bounds, but I found some recommendations for some good Israeli/Jewish food (I admit, I don't quite know if there's an overlap, but these are what google has told me) if you're interested. (x) (x mostly an interview, but names the restaurant later) (x), though most of it is in LA, so I don't know how helpful those are. ^^;

Haha, so I guess my complaint is legitimate. I am actually living in a less safe place than I've ever been. Oh well... (I mean, I also lived in Seoul and in Kyoto - both of which are pretty safe...)
And I'll be here a while.

Not out of bounds at all! I'm not in LA, though I do get there sometimes, and I will check out the eateries :) I've already had some great pizza here!
Sadly I can't partake of most of the food trucks, since I only eat Kosher. But I hear there are some Kosher ones too, so maybe one day!

Yeah, it does, sadly. :(

Neat! You hear for work or school? (Obviously those aren't the only two possibilities, but those are just the two I can think of lol).

Oh hell yeah there are! (All in LA, sorry, since I don't know exactly where you are, and you said you get there sometimes.)

Yelp

The Holy Grill

Mexikosher

JewishJournal.com's recommendations

Forward.com's recommendations

Yeah, that's kosher

Plus, most dessert trucks, I would think/hope? I know that there are some that include bacon for Proper Hipster Cred, but not all of them? Though I guess it would also depend on how strictly you keep kosher. (At least, if I'm understanding my Jewish friends correctly? Like, I know there's the "no pig products/no mixing of dairy and meat" level of kosher, but then isn't there also the "area must be cleansed with fire + blessed by a Rabbi" level of kosher? I think? And IDK if the food trucks follow that.

ALSO, dumb-ass question, sorry, but would you be able to eat at Halal certified places? I think there's some crossover, but I'll straight up say that I have no clue. Though it would make sense, I think? Because the food is probably similar and now I'm rambling, sorry. ^^;

Oh wow, thanks!

Well, I'm actually on the "cleanse it with fire" level of kosher, though there is no blessing by rabbis involved. The confusion is that some of the kosher certification organizations send rabbis to do inspection in factories and such, but that's about checking that they are adhering to the rules, no blessings involved.

And actually, afaik kosher is generally more strict than Halal, so I can't eat there... I believe that most kosher is halal, but halal does not necessarily mean kosher.

Oh man, sorry for the confusion! Most of my knowledge about that level of Kosher is from an old boss who worked at a Jewish summer camp, and according to her, they did the fire + Rabbi thing, so I (mistakenly) thought that that was normal. I'm assuming now that they just had the Rabbi come to make sure the non-Jewish kitchen staff was following protocol, which I guess would make more sense. >_>;;

Hopefully some of those places work with your preferred Kosher level. (Or however that should be stated. ^^;)

Thanks for the clarification!

Yeah, that's probably what the rabbi was doing. The truth is, you don't actually have to be ordained as a rabbi in order to do that job - some people simply become experts in kosher laws, without doing full ordination.

Yep, some of those places are kosher for me too :) I am excited.
