21-it's only "over priced" to the unemployed.

Get a job asshole, and maybe then you'll understand why bullshit piracy is bullshit to the people in the industry.

-has job and still thinks anime is overpriced and that the industry is bullshit-

Much Love,
Marysia

yes well the localization team of translators who go through bullshit language studies for years just to bring amine to wherever in bumfuck you live would appreciate your sentiment

You know, I think it's a damn shame that people who spend years studying a language end up getting screwed over "because of digital distribution," but until the companies they work for wise-up and stop being so stubborn and greedy, that's just going to keep happening. The people they need to turn to for change are not the fans who download, but the company heads who refuse to adapt to change and market their product more efficiently.

I browse youtube, download anime, read scanlations, and I don't feel the least bit guilty. I still support the shows I love through unofficial advertising (word of mouth), visiting conventions, and spending an obscene amount of money on merchandise.

Way to make an ass of yourself btw. :D

Much Love,
Marysia

[identity profile] seris.livejournal.com 2008-02-25 03:01 am (UTC)(link)
the thing about digital distribution is that it opens up a larger gateway for theft than it does when they produce it through tangible means. For every one jerk who shoplifts a copy of inuyasha there will be THOUSANDS who will download it and screw the profit margin up on their end because there is no way to prevent one person from illegally distributing it.

atleast with dvd/vhs distribution there is a set inventory that the business can keep track of. with digital media streaming there would be no way to keep track of all the profit lost.

and while that seems GREEDY to WANT MONEY for DISTRIBUTING GOODS that is basically how economy works my friend

AND

[identity profile] seris.livejournal.com 2008-02-25 03:20 am (UTC)(link)
On another note, while you could continue arguing that its up to the greedos in the magical land of nippon to adhere to the ever-changing tides of technology and embrace that digital distribution is the way to go, companies like bandai and animeworks and whatever else arent in charge of those things. They are not given the power, much less the lee-way to develop a program where they could distribute their media and charge its users; they'd need to fund or hire another company that specializes in such things to do that for them. Which then brings the question of "where do we get the money?" a loan is probable, but then that loops right back around to the whole illegal-distribution, thing.

Again, there is no full proof way of streaming media online without it leaking, and because there are so many ways to get things to leak on the internet there is really no way to keep theft at a manageable average.

There is way more problems with digital streaming that I could bring up to point here but those are just the essentials that I'm sure you and everyone and their moms already know.

Basically there is no good way to defend media piracy. Unless it's music media piracy.

[identity profile] kinneas.livejournal.com 2008-02-25 01:29 am (UTC)(link)
Rofl, yeah, because we're not too busy paying rent and buying food.

Look, if I made 40k a year with no family, we could talk. As it stands? Kiss my and anyone else without a particularly disposable income's ass. I don't even download anime anymore and you piss me off.
Edited 2008-02-25 01:29 (UTC)

[identity profile] transephera.livejournal.com 2008-02-25 02:31 am (UTC)(link)
Agreed.

[identity profile] seris.livejournal.com 2008-02-25 02:53 am (UTC)(link)
then guess what, if you cant afford to buy anime then chances are sitting down and watching anime shouldnt be a priority.

maybe instead of wasting all those hours downloading the latest episode of narartu or whatever, you could be spending it building a RESUME on MONSTER DOT CAWM and getting a better job that would allow you to BUY ANIME

[identity profile] kinneas.livejournal.com 2008-02-25 03:39 am (UTC)(link)
I don't even download anime anymore

Reading is fun.

Also? In college. You're my age, and you can't understand that not everyone's circumstances are your own? Are you just like the biggest bitch ever, or what? Grow up.

[identity profile] seris.livejournal.com 2008-02-25 03:52 am (UTC)(link)
I was using the universal "you", not you specifically but since you mention that you download(ed) anime I guess the point still stands.

And uh did i ever say i was the whitest rich kid ever here

no????

and besides that when the fuck did being poor entitle people to FREE ANIME

lame excuse is lame

[identity profile] kinneas.livejournal.com 2008-02-25 03:56 am (UTC)(link)
I downloaded unlicensed anime in 2001. Believe it or not, I actually object to downloading licensed anime unless one intends to buy the set eventually.

But you know what I object to more? People telling other people to get a fucking job so they can afford overpriced shit. As if their being lazy motherfuckers is the sole reason they can't afford it. It's the same mentality greedy neocons use to justify cutting vital welfare programs without fixing the reasons we need those in the first place.

[identity profile] seris.livejournal.com 2008-02-25 04:00 am (UTC)(link)
its called INFLATION, it happens in the US economy sometimes

meanwhile, my other point still stands; if you have to resort to piracy theres a good chance you need to re-asses your priorities

[identity profile] kinneas.livejournal.com 2008-02-25 04:07 am (UTC)(link)
Inflation has nothing to do with the disappearance of the middle class. Laissez faire, a too-free market, and corporate government corruption do. Economics are also fun.

Again, the only thing I seriously object to is your apparent thinking that people can so easily change their financial positions.

Also, you're way too angry about this issue.

[identity profile] seris.livejournal.com 2008-02-25 04:14 am (UTC)(link)
yous preaching to somebody who has been in poverty for near all my life there, so no it aint like im telling everybody to jump into the nearest pyramid scheme and GET RICH QUICK; i just know that a lot of people who have a lot of time to devote to downloading a lot of anime arent gainfully employed.

ffffffffffffffffffff

[identity profile] kinneas.livejournal.com 2008-02-25 04:17 am (UTC)(link)
The mean age for anime watching is mid-to-late teens, ie, still in school. I really don't expect them to be. You shouldn't either.

Also? A four-episode disk at the average retailer is like twenty-thirty bucks. "Not being able to afford anime" is pretty fucking easy.

But hey, if you wanna close the steadily increasing middle class gap the US, go for it!

[identity profile] seris.livejournal.com 2008-02-25 03:55 am (UTC)(link)
what i dont get is that people can say "oh i cant afford to buy ANIME" but then they go around saying they support the industry by buying hundreds of dollars worth of anime-related merch and go to conventions and shit

if youre going to steal atleast say it upfront, dont act like you support shit when all you support is your drug anime habbit

[identity profile] kinneas.livejournal.com 2008-02-25 03:57 am (UTC)(link)
I agree on this point, I really do. I'm not going to jump all over people, but it's incredibly hypocritical to say you can't afford Death Note or whatever and then buy one of those creepy doll things.

[identity profile] kiokushitakaa.livejournal.com 2008-02-25 09:41 am (UTC)(link)
Technically, and I'm being extremely technical here, the industry isn't losing money from me because I don't have the money to pay for it in the first place. I'm too busy paying rent, buying food and gas, and school supplies with my hard earned cash.

But I do manage to pick up the DVDs when I have extra income, so I don't think I'm terribly nor do I feel the least bit guilty for the anime I have downloaded in the past.

[identity profile] seris.livejournal.com 2008-02-25 05:11 pm (UTC)(link)

no shit??? I think that's why piracy is also referred to as theft???

futhermore,

[identity profile] kiokushitakaa.livejournal.com 2008-02-25 06:09 pm (UTC)(link)
It's in past tense, so that infers that I've not downloaded for years now. Yay for the English language. :D

And I know I'm a digital pirate. Arrgh! *dons eye patch*
