*agrees 100%*

I know the anime industry is all up in arms about illegal downloading, and they are pushing the blame onto fans instead of adequately adapting to the new developments in technology and using downloading to their advantage. I do feel for the people who are losing their jobs over this, but the companies producing these shows need to reconsider their strategy in dealing with this issue.

Much Love,
Marysia

Oh, god, especially with anime licensing. I have a lot of problems with how anime companies license and distribute series.

Personally, if it's possible, I think simulataneous Japanese and Western releases of anime series (most likely shown online, not dubbed but with subs since subs are faster) would be AMAZING. It wouldn't stop downloading, of course, but it would probably cut down on it. And then companies could see what is worth fully licensing, dubbing and distributing in the West.

In short, you know something's wrong when teenagers with Japanese dictionaries and After Effects are doing it better than monied, legitimate licensing companies.

Again, I agree. I don't understand why companies would flood the market with series that get little to no advertisement in the US other than the attention they gain with *gasp* fansubs and scanlations. It's completely illogical to invest so much money into the production of DVDs that any person with common sense KNOWs will not sell. So they flood the market, overspend their budget, then blame downloading for their failure to produce sales. They really need to stop playing the blame game and get their act together.

I mean, there is no reason they can't distribute series on the internet as well, and it would cut down production cost. They could host sites with streaming videos and chat programs that fans could pay a membership fee to access. Have actors, directors, and other VIPs visit the chats so fans can talk to them. They could offer up contests and polls for what series fans would like to see in DVD format and dubbed and charge 99 cents or so per episode for download. If they offered a reasonably priced alternative to illegal downloading that matched its convenience and encouraged an interactive following as fandom does, I think most fans would offer up the few extra bucks to support anime in the states, and the industry would not be having the issues its currently faced with.

I mean hell, the last convention I went to, people where willing to pay an extra $30 for a VIP pass so they wouldn't have to wait in line for autographs and could attend guest meet-and-greets. I think they would be willing to spend $20 a month so chat with these guys online.

Much Love,
Marysia

The same thing could be done with manga, too. The cost of printing and distributing could go down a lot if companies like Tokyopop could offer a pay-for-download service. (I'd like that, mostly because it's a space issue- I have a tiny apartment, not a lot of room for books or manga, so if I can have manga on my computer, I'd rather have that.)

But will any of this ever happen? Probably not. XP

Brain Twin :D

Space is a big issue that I hear come up a lot. It's something companies really need to consider, and I have noticed re-releases of dvds in slimmer packaging lately. Maybe they've picked up on that?

Whee, copyright law!

[identity profile] pinstripesuit.livejournal.com 2008-02-25 03:58 am (UTC)(link)
I don't know enough yet about DRM to figure out how that would work into downloadable content the companies could offer, because people ARE going to share this stuff. Maybe something like iTunes where you can download a song and share it with up to 3-5 friends before the DRM prevents it from being shared more than that? Hey, free promotion!

In short: Anime licensing companies are still stuck in the days of hometaping, when you had to know a guy who knew a guy who had a fifth-generation VHS copy of Evangelion.

Fans now use Bittorrent and Youtube, for three very important reasons:
1. SPEED
2. Quality
3. CONVENIENCE

Anime companies, in their current way of doing business, can not even match this. So they need to adapt, or they will die out. Even if it's new, scary technology.

They tried this. They did this when the last eps of Deathnote were released in Japan, and they did a very fast official translation, and posted it online for only a few bucks per download, so that the people in America who had been following the series could have it right away.

And what do you think happened? The fans spit in their faces and bitched and whined that they DARED to try to charge them to watch their anime online.

The problem is on both sides here.
