...Any recs besides Vegeta? (I know this is lazy when I can do the same, lol. Probably will later!)

I love this kind of thing most the time. Halo: Reach had several deaths like this, and they killed me. (In the best way.) Maybe Gandalf counts...but probably not because that didn't exactly stick. *cough*icon*cough*

I can definitely recommend anything Saint Seiya; heroic sacrifice abounds. EVERYWHERE. (I actually have a bit of an overview on it in the first part of this post.)

Saint Seiya: Lost Canvas (the anime is on Crunchyroll) is my favorite. It's a good entry point, I think; most recently animated, it's also fairly short and has plenty of heroic sacrifice. ~ I am also fond of the first third of the slightly older (2003) Saint Seiya: Hades OVA (which is on Netflix); and, if you don't mind old school art, the original series (1986-88), which is on Crunchyroll as well.

Thank you! I'm going to bookmark this post. I don't use crunchyroll all that often these days and I'm not fond of the ads, BUT I have used them in the past, and once I get off my ass I'll be using it in the future to catch up with a few series. So these are helpful suggestions!

The Lost Canvas sounds best simply because I have an easier time making my way through short series, but I'll keep the others in mind too!

Lost Canvas is also a prequel of sorts to all the other Saint Seiya series, as it is set during the "previous" war between Hades and Athena (supposedly taking place @1743). ~ The anime only covers the first - half or two-thirds of the manga, but if you find you finish the anime and want to know what happened, there are scanslations of the rest floating around.

Ah, okay. I've read a few series online (that's the only way I could find them) so I'm totally okay with scandalations! If I get around to it...

It's kind of nice that the short anime is the prequel, since by the end you should know if the rest of the series are going to be something you're interested in.

yeah, sorry, I came back to clarify that my blather was meant to convey that LC is pretty much stand-alone; all the rest of Saint Seiya (which takes place more or less modern-day) has a certain chronological/narrative flow that makes a bit less sense if the various pieces are viewed out of order.

Bottom line: Saint Seiya is very much like DBZ, but with less comedy, MUCH prettier men, and a lot more deaths-due-to-heroic-sacrifice.

Ooo, well thanks for clarifying, anyway! I haven't watched DBZ in years but I was all over it in my teens. It still stands out to me, so if this is similar in some ways I can see the appeal.

Prettier men...can see the appeal of that too, as I am shallow.
