I think you've got to separate the fictional from the real life. Real life incest is usually rape and loaded with consent issues and power imbalances.

Pretty much.

I'm all for trying to understand that people can make distinctions between kink and real life, but I have to say there is a trend with big incest fans that they do generally extend their love of it to real life in a super creepy way. Get it together incest fans.

This. Incest irl is almost always abuse, with some very messed-up power dynamics.

I think there are instances of it in real life where it's not rape or non-consensual, but the people involved tend to keep quiet about it because of the stigma.

Only an hour or so ago Mum and I were talking about adoption issues in eras before single parent pensions (which made it easier for single mothers to raise their own children) and she mentioned a story she had heard about an accidental sibling marriage due to twins being adopted out to separate families. That is probably the only way I can see consensual incest happening without power imbalances and consent issues, and situations like would be rare - even rarer now that single/teen mothers having to adopt out children is so uncommon as to not exist anymore.

Adoptions like that happen all the time, though. I mean, there are also cases of half-siblings who aren't raised by the same parent/s, but seriously, there are so many reasons why people give up children for adoption, and often it means you'll have siblings you'd never even know about, perhaps in other parts of the country or the world.

(I came down to the comments for this secret entirely because a couple days ago someone I know was talking about having read a recent account of separated twins learning that they were related due to genetic counseling bc of baby woes, so... like, that's been rattling around in my head as a thing that happens. But yeah-- it's because they met as adults and did not have a period of learning to associate each other with the concept of 'family'-- the Westermarck Effect, as alluded to below)

Okay, maybe I'm overstating just how uncommon both separated siblings and accidental relationships between them may be, but it's still uncommon, and Westermark means relationships between siblings raised together are unlikely or chock full of issues.

As I said in my comment directly to the fscom post, I simply keep fictional incest and realistic incest issues compartmentalised in my mind.

Oh, yeah-- gosh, okay, just re-read what I wrote and I feel like it's awkwardly worded. The accidental incest is definitely not common, I shouldn't think, right. Just the adoption part and the not necessarily knowing all your blood relatives.

I honestly don't think the genetic side of incest is the real problem IRL. One-off incest is not likely to cause problems unless the family already has a past history of a genetic condition - it's repeated incest, generation after generation that causes problems to crop up.

No, the problem is, as others have said, that consensual incest that is not rife with power imbalances and coercion is rare as hen's teeth, especially, as I mentioned in other comments, since the instance of single or teenaged mothers having to adopt out their children is almost non-existent these days due to single parent pensions and a loss of stigmas on unmarried motherhood.

This is really one of those issues where reality and fiction are distinctly compartmentalized in my mind. I like incest fic, but I retain a realistic opinion about incest IRL and know that to romantic consensual relationships in fiction are very unlikely to ever happen, especially between siblings who grew up together.

'Incest is beautiful'? You're one sick motherfucker.

Sure is a lot of fucking concern-trolling in this comment section. WOW PEOPLE CAN SEPARATE FICTION FROM REALITY??? NEWS FLASH. Fictional incest is super hot, OP, you do you!
