So google tells me this is indeed a movie about Aokigahara and I'm kind of "Eh" about it, to be honest. I always thought that it would probably be a logical setting for a horror movie but an American horror movie? No thanks.

I also don't think it's too great to use this whole thing for a horror movie setting, considering how many people die there each year. Seems kind of tasteless, in a way.

mte. People who died here passed away in one of the saddest ways possible. I'm with the people 'flipping their shit' over the movie. It's not a nice idea, period.

Ikr. I don't know about you, but If I had a relative or friend kill them self in Aokigahara, and only a few years later for Hollywood to make a crappy b-horror movie out of the place and claim all the deaths there were actually the cause of shitty "spooky" cgi monsters instead of sucide, I'd be sooo pisssssed.

It's such a sad place and to exploit it for a cheap horror flick. Ugh. That'd be comparable if a Japanese film crew thought "Hey, you know what? Let's make a silly Kaiju movie based on 9/11!"

Considering that kaiju movies are based around the atomic bomb then honestly it wouldn't be that unusual. Nobody calls those explotative...

The difference is that they were basically a coping mechanism for the Japanese film industry to deal with a tragedy in their own country. It would be quite different doing this with a tragedy a different country faced - that would be exploitative .
