I think some of this was Star Wars' choice. There was a cut-off for consideration for awards where the movie had to be screened for critics at least, but Star Wars decided not to show a critics' screening, wanting to contain spoilers. Their opening was after the cut-off.

However, The Critics Choice Awards just took the rare step of adding Star Wars to their Best Picture Nominations (making it 11 instead of the usual 10 films). They had to make an exception for Star Wars to do this, something they've only done one time before, but they're clearly recognizing Star Wars.
