Yes, it took the script for Robinson Crusoe on Mars and struck the monkey from it. Love the film if you want, but don't lie about it. There wasn't an original bit about it. Same for Star Wars of course, being fair.

And Star Wars was Kurosawa in space but I'd still call the original film unique. Being inspired and doing something new with a concept is not the same thing as copying another film's structure almost verbatim.

Showing what it would be like for someone to survive alone on Mars in a semi-believable fashion.

Look, nothing is wholly original -- nearly anything has been done before in one form or another. Cracked even pointed out how 'Wreck-It Ralph' is similar to 'Taxi Driver'. But 'The Force Awakens' didn't even try to hide that they were remaking the original. Taking a centuries-old novel and updating it with modern sci-fi is more than what they did.

Robinson Crusoe on Mars did the same thing, using what they presumed was scientifically possible in that era.

That movie wasn't trying to be realistic on account of, you know, the aliens. 'The Martian' was an attempt to explore something that could occur in our universe as we know it.

Again you're not saying anything I haven't said-- nothing is 'original'. There's always something that came before it. But there's a difference between an original story that's inspired by older works and a sequel that's basically a remake of the original film.
