people STILL go to this forest to commit suicide. there are signs there begging and urging people to think of their loved ones and seek help. in 2010 it was estimated that over 200 people had attempted suicide there. the fact that Hollywood wants to make a film exploiting such a tragic and sad story and are promoting it as a regular old scary movie is pretty tasteless and uncool. not to mention, haven't they invented some kind of backstory/demon that is the root of it all? i might be wrong on that but if so, also kinda uncool. and yeah. there is also the fact that they took something so deeply rooted in Japanese history and are making it all about an American woman? that's a little bit of a dick move too.

no one's saying don't watch it -- you're not gonna be the only person rushing to the theater to see it, i bet. they're just saying it's a shitty thing of Hollywood to do. it's okay to be critical of things, even things you're interested in, and even things you might end up enjoying.
