The first time it happened, unfortunately not :( We got a couple of rabbits, but our area regularly gets visited by dangerous animals since my family lives in the mountains, near a jungle, and the rabbits escaped one night and got killed.

The second time we got hamsters and tried caring for them for a while, but my mum eventually came to the conclusion that we couldn't take care of them and asked the nearest pet shop if they could take them, and fortunately they said yes. I guess that worked out relatively better than the rabbits.

I was especially annoyed when it happened because my brother was still really young at the time and it was hard making sure he didn't badly disturb them. At least they lived, and my sister (who was the one the hamsters were gifted to) learned a valuable lesson in the expenditure involved in caring for a pet.

Why didn't you take the rabbits to a shelter as soon as you got them? I hope you all realize you're as much to blame for their deaths as whoever gave them to you. The hamsters too, because you took them to a pet shop instead of a shelter, and pet shops are awful. They probably died there.

They are animals who broke out by accident and thus were vulnerable to the natural dangers of the world. That's not anyone's "fault", it's how nature works. If someone's dog broke out of their house and got hit by a car, would you say that's their fault to0? That's ridiculous. Playing the blame game and laying guilt on someone who lost a family member is a spectacularly shitty thing to do. Accidents happen.

because you took them to a pet shop instead of a shelter

Yeah, because there are totally shelters that take rabbits and hamsters everywhere! I think there's a whopping total of one in my state. A lot of states have none. Pet shops don't exist to torture and murder animals. They have every reason to keep the animals alive. The hamsters probably found good new homes--or died in the pet shop of old age, given that hamsters don't live that long.
