I haven't seen The Martian because I couldn't finish the book. It was awful. Halfway thru the book I wanted him to die so he would STFU. The fact that it's Oscar fodder makes me so sad.

You should give the movie a try. I hated the book in the first few chapters and gave up, but liked the movie quite a bit.

Mat Damon gives the character the charming, quirky sort of personality that makes you root for him and allows him to survive alone against such odds that the book was trying for, but failed so hard into smug douche-bag territory.
