My impulse in terms of tasteful vs. tacky is to think it depends how it's handled, and also to wonder how many other fictional works have taken Aokigahara or a location based off of it as a setting (I know at least one horror manga has had an arc there, for instance -- and now glancing at Wikipedia, which says there have been a few movies, novels, comics, etc. with reference to it). Has this been hyped a lot in comparison?

Pretty much this, I think.

i can understand it more if the media about this particular forest is based in japanese media, as it's their own. it doesn't make any less tacky/tasteless but a japanese horror movie versus some shitty american movie is quite the difference.
