Describing the third-wheel female character as 'whip-smart'. I think I've reached saturation point with that term and now it's just fucking annoying.

I hate that term. It is always used for women, and it always sounds paternalistic and condescending.

DA. I haven't seen it with women. Usually I see it with kids, the teen geniuses and skinny nerds usually. Occasionally adults if they fit that sort of mould as well. It does tend to sound very paternalistic/condescending, though, probably because I do usually see it towards kids. I imagine it'd rub me wrong if I did encounter it towards an adult woman.

OP. Huh, I've only ever seen it describing women. Usually in a throw-away manner just to tick the 'inclusive' check-box, so they can concentrate on the main m/m pairing.

And hey, m/m is what I'm there for, so I don't really have a leg to complain on. But after seeing that term used multiple times in several different fandoms, it's become so rote that it sticks out to me now.

It is annoying in slash, and even more annoying in het where the male character uses the term to describe his female partner. I've seen that a lot too.

I don't like the word "bright" used in that exact same way.
