What kind of party do you prefer..

(Anonymous) 2015-12-26 09:51 pm (UTC)(link)
Everyone sits down and you (ideally) talk to some people, or everyone wanders and you (ideally) talk to various people?

Kind of based on the holidays.

Sit. Especially if there's alcohol involved.

The first one, hands down. I'm not particularly social plus I don't like moving around much.

Sitting down. I never have the courage to start conversations with strangers or people I don't know very well, but I'm perfectly fine if they want to talk to me. In the second scenario I would probably end up not talking to anyone at all.

Sit. I like small gatherings in general to begin with, so there's not as much need for milling about, and I think it's easier to connect with and talk to people that way.

Probably depends on the occasion and who I know. If I know people, being forced to sit with people I don't know (or know but am not enjoying for whatever reason) when I could be having fun with people five tables over sucks if there's not a non-awkward way to move. I'd rather be able to get around and talk to people; I also enjoy meeting new ones.

At the same time, if everyone's wandering and you don't know anyone or they're all otherwise occupied, it's very awkward. Also, I've tried to talk to people I don't know with varying results. I've had an equal number of pleasant conversations and "I don't know you, please go away" conversations. Because of that, I'm always hesitant, and then everyone else thinks I don't want to talk as I end up staring at my phone.

We all go to the theatre, see something proper like a good Shakespeare play or maybe a ballet. If we have the money and the party is small, then we get a box, but the stalls if needs must. Then afterwards a nice meal, and finally we go somewhere with drinks service and armchairs or chaise lounges and room enough for people to stand and chat if they wish.

D&D party. Everyone gets drunk and pretends to be elves and dwarves.

This sounds fun.

I'd also add options on a movie marathon party, which I have never done either, but it'd be fun to sit down with fellow fans and a pile of junk-food and watch something like LotR straight through.

A good party should have aspects of both. The NYE I always go to is the latter, where there's several extended families (most are related by marriage) + a network of the hosts' childrens' friends (this is me) all mixing together and you say hi and chat a bit, then sit down for dinner with some other people. Hopefully by midnight you've spent some time with everybody.

I was recently at a party that was the former, though, and it was kinda odd. Parties where everybody knows the host but most guests don't know each other at all are a little awkward. I was the "childhood friend recently back in touch" mixed in with her college friends and work friends. I wish I could have stayed a bit longer as they got a game of Telephone Pictionary going just as I had to go. But it really was just hanging out and talking, all in a circle mostly. Odd experience.

As ginainthekingsroad said, a mix of both would be good, and reminds me of what church socials were a bit like. Usually they were potluck affairs where everyone brings a dish of something, then sits around in whatever chairs have been set out and chatters.

But I'd go for the DD party someone else suggested, or a movie marathon party as I mentioned.
