Guild Wars 2 vs Wildstar or other MMO

(Anonymous) 2015-12-26 10:06 pm (UTC)(link)
I am looking for an MMO to play with my sister that is not World of Warcraft (for various reasons). Right now the front runners are GW2 and Wildstar.

What are the pros and cons of each? How much is the game inhibited by the free to play model? Which do you prefer?

I've never heard of Wildstar, but GW2 is insanely fun! You can be a number of different races, and people can get pretty creative with their characters. The maps are ENORMOUS (which can be both a pro and a con). There's a pretty steep learning curve, though. I still need to get used to it myself. Also, a lot of the cooler weapons and items either require insane amounts of farming or actual money to acquire them.

Even then, I'd recommend it. The Heart of Thorns expansion added a lot to the game, like new areas and new functionalities (DRAGON PETS!!)

I've not played Wildstar(I keep meaning to give it a go though because bunny-ladies), but GW2 is a lot of fun. The character creations is hugely customisable and there are a lot of options for skin/hair/eye colour, the armour generally looks very nice too with some of the top stuff looking extremely nice.

Also I like how the questing system works, instead of a quest log that you fill and empty out you go to different areas and activate the events or quests there, which I like a lot and think makes the questing feel pretty smooth.

GW2 and Wildstar are both fun in different ways; I also like Rift, which is entirely free-to-play (no initial purchase or subscription required.)

Wildstar POV

I've only played Wildstar, I've been in since beta.

I like it, it's got planets and science and mounts and pets. I can play solo or in a team (I prefer solo but people who can randomly help me out when I'm stuck always seem to be around)

I don't pay much attention to clothing options, but I can deck my mount out in random shit and I have a floating space house with a garden and some kind of portal to a dungeon of increasing difficulty and I like doing all the random challenges.

It's also not too grindy, which I appreciate. I can't STAND grinding and I am out if I have to be too repetitive. It's boring yo.

It has too many currencies though. There's like 4 going on right now? So I never know if I can buy something or not because I have a lot of a couple of currencies but not much of the two newer ones because I've been playing ARK instead (also free to play mmo, but with dinosaurs and breeding).

I don't know how something can be inhibited by F2P models but I prefer not paying $ every month to play a game...
