I hate them too! I mostly read Classic and historical fiction and fantasy, because I want to live for a moment in any world but this one. If I'm reading Tolkien's fantasy works, I want to read about....Tolkien's fantasy world, you know? That's the very reason I'm reading them, imagine that! That world is infinitely more interesting to me than "Frodo and Sam work in an office" could ever be.

Ditto for me. They only work for me if they're reincarnation fics, because I feel those have a bit more touch with the original canon, and even those can be lackluster.
