Finn and Poe. What do y'all think? Is it just subtext? Is it one-sided? Or will it sail?

You forgot Rey. And yes, Finn/Poe/Rey will sail.

Depends on whether China changes its anti-homosexuality laws. As it stands only villains can be gay, and they must be sufficiently punished for being so. That means you could possibly have Hux/Ben as a ship as long as they both die at the end of the third movie, or possibly Phasma as a depraved lesbian, but you'll never get Poe and Finn or Rey and Leia as your ships in the movie unless one of them also turns evil Spoiler: Rey is totally going over to the Dark Side due to Han's death.

Thank you for posting the only relevant issue. It always weirds me out when people act as though these choices are made for personal reasons, not business decisions by international conglomerates.

However, I do think it's possible that Disney (a surprisingly gay-friendly company) might choose to go with canon-gay Poe as a way of deliberately playing chicken with Chinese law. "A billion of your citizens want to see this sequel, which has a dude kissing another dude. You already let them see the first one. You going to tell them they can't see the sequel? You think they won't find ways to see it anyway? Do you want a BILLION of your people to be motivated to find ways to crack your Great Firewall?"

And suddenly Disney would be out of China for good.

It can be all subtext, all one-sided, and in fact all imaginary - and yet that ship will still sail. It's fandom, and we are unsinkable.

There is that one Ellen interview that implies that Oscar Isaac played it as a romance, but it's hard to tell if he was serious, if he was joking, or was serious expecting everyone else would think he was joking.

I ship it hardcore, but a platonic guy/girl strong friendship with a queer side-romance would be new, unexpected, and super progressive, and J.J. Abrams seems to want the new trilogy to be progressive as fuck. He's not directing the second movie, but if he has some kind of control, we already know he has no second thought about changing stuff. He managed to blew up Vulcan and off you-know-who.

Either way I'll try not to worry about it becoming canon for another 520-ish days and enjoy the fic.

OP here and I've seen that interview, too. I'm not one for the obvious ships usually, and not particularly intersted in fic about them, but for once I have the strong feeling that there's supposed to be some sort of romance going on there, or at least Poe being bi or gay.

I like it, but I doubt it will be canon. I think Finn/Rey is where the writers are going. I ship that too.

Ship what you want, OP, canon or not. I'll be over here OTPing Kylo/Hux which will never ever be canon.

I prefer Finn/Rey. Didn't really care for Poe (nothing against him, just like the other 2 more)

Well if we're talking fandom-wise it's already sailing away, but if you're asking if I think it's going to be canon? No. (I think Finn/Rey is probably what they're going to go for).

Do I think the subtext is placed in there on purpose? Actually yes, because in the novelization there are several little things (really REALLY little, but definitely more than one moment) that suggest Poe is canon queer. I could actually see the movies making that official, and with that, they COULD even make it explicit that he's interested in Finn. However, I DO think Finn/Rey is endgame and don't quite think the people in charge have the balls to make two of their main three queer. I think the most they'd give us is Poe being gay or bi, and having a crush on Finn that goes nowhere and they stay friends

I think it's mostly shipping goggles, just like Reylo. Finn likes Poe because he's his first friend and also gave him ma real name, Poe like Finn because he saved him and BB-8, who is basically his dog. This is Disney, and they're not going to make a Star Wars character gay, hell, they wouldn't allow Gravity Falls to make a one time joke character gay. It's going to be Finn and Rey, if anything.

It'll sail no matter what as far as fandom is concerned. I'll be pleasantly surprised if it goes anywhere more than subtext in the actual films though, seeing as how Disney owns Star Wars now. :(

doubt it'll become canon (since canon seems obv set up for Finn/Rey), but I would love for Poe to be canon gay, even if it's just a scene of him flirting up a guy at a cantina

I don't get how people can seriously bet on finn/rey. Sure, they're cute. Luke&leia cute. Bff-cute. But romance material? Hell no.

Uh, yeah, totally BFF. That's why Finn asked her if she had a boyfriend. Totally non romantic u gaiz. He was totes thinking about Poe's butt...that's why he chased after Rey the whole movie. Finn and Rey couldn't be more obviously heading towards canon romance, it's already there. Don't cry too much when Poe is hitting on some chicks next movie.
