What to get?

(Anonymous) 2015-12-26 11:50 pm (UTC)(link)
My brother is sending me a gift certificate to thinkgeek.com (he's sent it but for some reason it's still processing, he's working on that). I know it's for $50. My problem is that I don't know what item to get because I'm so damn picky. I don't want things, I want something that has a use/purpose for it. Not something that looks cute like a trinket or just sits on a shelf. I thought about the clothing accessories, but I have a weird thing about logos or items on clothing. I wear solid color shirts, very simple. The bags are neat, but I either don't like how they look or the shape is wrong (I don't use messenger bags, backpacks, etc.)

So should I just give the certificate to my other brother and call it a day? Am I that hopeless that I can't call myself that much of a geek if I don't want their items??

What do you do when you get a gift certificate that you can't use?

Sometimes I save those and use them to buy gifts for other people. I like giving gifts better than receiving them, so that works.

OTOH, since yours is from family, they're a bit more likely to ask what you got with the gift card. Good luck.

That is a good idea (and I realize I made it confusing, I have two brothers, one gave us the gift certificates). I could look around for a gift, one brother has a birthday in April. My family wouldn't ask what I got with my gift card.

I was thinking about their leggings though. There a few that are very minimalistic. But being a petite person, anything I get would just be too long!

There's more there than bags, clothes and collectibles. Browse the shit out of that site until you find something. Whatever you do, don't regift something from immediate family to immediate family. And if you don't find anything you like, do like the person above said and buy gifts for other peopme with it. Then when asked what you bought, you can say "I bought X" without adding "and then gave it to Y."

Depending on what kind of fandoms you're into, they have a ton of awesome coffee mugs or kitchen stuff. Geeky and functional. Or the flash drives. You can never have too many of those, really.

what fandoms are you in to? What about socks? I have nice Star Wars socks from thinkgeek. I love finding random things on thinkgeek. How about blankets? I love the TARDIS fleece blanket, it's super soft!

I just got a dragon mug from there, which was cool because it's microwavable and so many novelty mugs aren't. I also got a unicorn one, but tbh it looked kind of shoddy and cheap. They've got lots of fun ice-cube trays. Also various tech gadgets. And I think they still sell miracle-berry tablets, which can be fun. They're made from powdered freeze-dried miracle berry, an African plant that knocks out your tongue's ability to taste sour things for an hour or so. So lemons taste like lemonade, and most fruit tastes like candy. Unsweetened yogurt topped with fruit is amazing. Or yeah, buy gifts for other people.

There's all kinds of non-fandom, useful stuff. I just bought two power cubes.
