Just came across this one: an author who is inflating her comment count by posting a reply to anyone who's ever commented on the fic -- EVERY TIME A NEW CHAPTER IS POSTED.

Hmmm, I don't know about this one. I always feel so grateful for any comments that I feel bad if I don't reply and thank them. And if the same person has taken the time to comment on every chapter, I like to talk about the story with them as they go.

I'm sure the comment count thing DOES happen, but also...writers are usually just really happy to get comments, and to see people enjoying their story. Especially those who write in small fandoms (like me).

Eh, I actually like it that AO3 lets you reply to comments even though I don't even write fic anymore. That was always a feature I liked on LJ, because you could start conversations with your readers right there in the post.

Also people sometimes complain about authors who are "too snooty" to respond to comments, so I guess they can't win.
