I'm not forced to watch this, so I really can't care enough about someone casting a black woman for a play, which is probably... London-only?

BUT from my point of view, this whole decision goes against the existing canon. I don't care if Rowling never explicitly mentioned Hermione's skin colour, but for 15 years we had the picture of Hermione Granger as a white character. When Rowling gave her approval for Emma's role then she set an unwritten-type of canon and we, the readers/viewers accepted that.

No one is 100% wrong or right in this debate, but I blame Rowling for being a unresponsible "owner" of her own world.
Imho, her tweet about this matter was bad and came out as a cocky reply. "lol I never stated this in my books ever!!!!"

Curse you, JK Rowling, for choosing not to be an asshole about the casting of a play! She should be ashamed of herself!

Oh no, a decision was made based on talent instead of race!

I get it: it's actually about ethics in world-building.

Race was obviously a factor in choosing her, they wanted to make it more 'diverse'.

So what you're saying is a black actress can't be more talented than a white actress. Her only appeal is her skin color will add diversity.

What I said is what I said. 90% of the time when they change a white character to a POC it's because they're trying to make the story more 'diverse'.

So?

(Anonymous) 2015-12-28 01:07 am (UTC)(link)
Sooo... it obviously wasn't a case of her race being inconsequential to her casting?

And you know this for certain... how?

(Anonymous) 2015-12-28 06:14 am (UTC)(link)
You picturing Hermione (and probably most other characters in most other books) was white says soooo much more about you than it does about anything else.

(Anonymous) 2015-12-28 08:02 am (UTC)(link)
You know some of us live in a country where dark skinned people hardly ever appear. Not everything can be compared to France, England and the US. *Eastern Eu and the Balkans waving from the distance*

Yeah how could anyone look at the book's covers and illustrations and think that the characters are white?! It boggles the mind.
