It's almost 2016

and people still misuse the term troll constantly

What do you consider to be the proper use?

Something that's initially done to get a rise out of people who aren't familiar with a community's normal conduct. If you're worth any salt, it shouldn't be immediately recognized as such.

Calling shitposting, things you disagree with but are well reasoned, stalking, or obvious inflammatory opinions trolling is a disgrace. And that people here constantly shout troll at all of the above says how little trolling we've truly had.

Anything done in order to get a rise is trolling, whether it's shitposting, stalking, or inflammatory opinions. You can be a legit Satanist but going to a Christian forum and answering every thread with Hail Satan is trolling by shitposting.

Being shitposting, stalking, or an inflammatory opinion doesn't automatically mean it's not a troll as you appear to be suggesting.

addendum

image macros are not memes

This is interesting, because that's a recent cultural development. In the early/mid 2000s, image macros were in most cases considered to be memes. Or at least meme-delivery vehicles, particularly with lolspeak memes. What the hell else would you call a classic like "O RLY?" for example? It's an image macro and a meme.

And with anon's earlier shoutout to mudkipz, today is apparently a good day for ancient memes.

Here's a revolutionary notion-maybe the people calling troll aren't the only ones who don't kn ow what trolling is supposed to be.

Maybe the people who pick fights, post wankbait, harass users and act like assholes think they're "trolling". A lot of people do use "lol I'm just trolling" when they're called on being fucktarts.

If you're going to point blame maybe you should consider that.
