Just out of curiosity, when you find fans of things you like to squee with... are those things generally popular? Or are they super-niche?

Asking because I tend to like rarepairs, and in many of my fandoms I've been the sole person writing the fics for them. After a while you just get tired of hearing crickets, you know? So I'd like to hear more about your experience, and if it really would be any better for someone like me.

Sort of yes and no. The fandom I'm in right now isn't that big (definitely not one of the big juggernaut fandoms), but I ship the most popular ship. What helped me was actually just posting meta analyzing my fave character and their relationships with various members of the cast. Those posts plus the occasional fic really started the ball rolling. So for a rarepair it can depend, even something small like writing why you ship it and why you like this character dynamic might be enough to get some other shippers to crawl out of the woodworks (or maybe even get other people to ship it too! My main ship is the fandom's big ship but I'm a multishipper at heart and people have told me that I made them like a couple rarepairs just by talking about them).
