I still need to watch the last part of Utena, but my first thought after reading this secret was:

"ANTHY IS AN INNOCENT CINNAMON ROLL WHO CAN DO NO WRONG" - What Utena thought at the beginning of the series and

"ANTHY IS EEEEVIL INCARNATE" - something Akio would think.

Not all that wrong, really!

Without giving spoilers, Anthy meant well--still means well, to some degree--and is trapped going in circles, and it's made her just a little bitter and twisted. She's got a lot of layers that make her a person instead of all bad or all good, and she's super-interesting!

That's kind of the thing about Utena in general--everyone is trapped going in circles, and that's what the "revolution" is about. Not about overthrowing kings, though that plays into it, but about breaking out of bad cycles and growing.

I'm realizing that I remember next to nothing about this series. I came out of it feeling like Anthy's characterization was pretty thin.

You only see two layers at first, the one Utena see (shy cute girl everyone is mistreating and needs to be rescued) and, introduced in the Black Rose arc, the manipulative piece of shit. Then there's only a handful of scenes and episodes when you get to see the real her, but since there is so much other shit going on, you easily miss it.
