It isn't the first time this sort of thing's happened. Different religion, but one of the leaders of the Westboro Baptist Church (whose daughter left and wrote a book, I believe - I forget her name but I think she models now) was a journalist who studied the cult initially. Then he dug in too deep and sunk in. This might be what happened to Skramo. :/

However, and this is another kind of horrifying, is it possible he's been kidnapped and is being coerced into saying that sort of thing? It sounds like something ISIS would do.

Because he wouldn't go with his entire family to Syria for non-ISIS related reasons putting him in a position to be kidnapped. Nothing about this case from media reports suggests the slightest possibility that's the case, ISIS have never done it that way before, and he's an entirely standard story of radicalization.
