Harassment of women, threats of rape, doxxing, talking down to women, mobbing up to criticise women. All of this when done through on line is cyber-violence.

Yes and no.

Is it the same as actual violence? No.

What it is, is a term created to gain more emotional impact for somthing people should already care about. The internet is a dangerous place for women right now but online abuse of women doesn't get taken seriously, sadly, so the term cyber violence was coined to give it more weight. It's hyperbole, but it's kinda necessary.

It's a dishonest, proto-fascist tactic and the people who think it's justified should just get stay in their little safe spaces on tumblr and leave the rest of the internet (and the rest of the world) to people with a grain of sense.

I wouldn't say violence can be committed on the Internet, though it can certainly be set up through it.

I think calling it cyber "violence" misses a big IMPORTANT fact that something doesn't have to be physically violent to be bad.

I feel like people tend to call things "violence" nowadays or insist it's really JUST like violence to make it sound worse.

Things like cyber-harassment and cyber bullying are emotional abuse. And emotional abuse is just as and sometimes more damaging than physical for some people.

I was bullied in school a lot but never touched. By the end of my school years I came out with negative levels of self worth and a feeling of anger at myself that sparked years of depression.

I would not call what was done to me violence. But I would call it bullying. It doesn't have to be violent to be bad. It doesn't have to be physical to be bad.

Do...do you think that physical abuse does not also have an emotional component? People are get repeatedly beat up at school are also suffering from emotional abuse.

Yes, I hate that. You see it on Tumblr all the time, sometimes with people getting mad at the fact that certain actions are given another word instead of "violence."

Gentrification isn't violence. Paying your employees the minimum wage isn't violence. Using the wrong pronouns for a trans person isn't violence. They're all things that can facilitate violence in the very long run, but they're not.violence.

i think there are a lot of cyber crimes that can easily cause real life violence, i think that counts as cyber violence
