I like this song. And it isn't nearly as sanctimonious as Imagine which claims that religion causes every problem ad that if we all just got rid of religion there would be world peace. As if there aren't other things causing conflict and as if there aren't healthy ways to do religion and as if religion isn't an important part of life for some people.

If you think Imagine limited itself to religion being a detriment to peace, you didn't listen well enough. If you didn't grasp the salient point being belief in a world where everybody can get along regardless of religion, country and wealth, you missed the point.

da

i'll admit to missing the point then

i don't care if its sarcastic or attempted point making or whatever, nobody who sits behind the world's most expensive piano while sitting in a house worth £30m on today's market (and £145000 in 1969 money, a sum beyond most people today) is remotely capable of imagining no possessions

Truth.

(Anonymous) 2015-12-31 10:15 am (UTC)(link)
sa as above reply

also, let's face it, religion has caused a lot more problems than it's ever solved

(Anonymous) 2015-12-31 12:27 am (UTC)(link)
Er, that's not completely accurate. "Imagine" makes no claims, it only invites people to imagine how different the world might be if _____ didn't exist. It also doesn't cite religion as the sole source of problems like you claimed, it suggests that religion, nationalism and greed cause problems... and they do.

(Anonymous) 2015-12-31 10:25 am (UTC)(link)
"i hope some day you'll join us / and the world will live as one"

sounds like a claim to me, and a pretty fucking bold one at that

(Anonymous) 2015-12-31 11:40 am (UTC)(link)
Nah.

"claims that religion causes every problem ad that if we all just got rid of religion there would be world peace"

=/=

You may say I'm a dreamer
But I'm not the only one
I hope someday you'll join us
And the world will be as one

Literally nowhere does the song say what you claim. Nowhere. Just like saying "Imagine you have a pizza" is not the same thing as saying "Pizza is the best food in the world". There are many valid reasons to dislike Lennon, just as there are many valid reasons to dislike this song. But your reading comprehension is very, very poor, and you should not rely upon what is a fundamental lack of understanding of the English language when forming your opinions on it.

(Anonymous) 2016-01-05 12:48 am (UTC)(link)
your reading comprehension is even worse - tell me exactly where i said he made that specific claim

you said he made no claims

i cited an instance which certainly appears to be a claim that the world would be as one if only we would all share in lennon's dream

(Anonymous) 2015-12-31 02:36 am (UTC)(link)
Agreed. I hate Imagine, though not just because of the anti-religion thing. It's basically "imagine if everybody was the same and there was no culture". Gee whiz, what a great world.

(Anonymous) 2015-12-31 02:47 am (UTC)(link)
Exactly! Oh, and you can't own anything or want anything because that might make you interested in something. God forbid!

(Anonymous) 2015-12-31 04:09 am (UTC)(link)
... there is nothing about everyone being the same and no culture in that song.

(Anonymous) 2015-12-31 05:07 am (UTC)(link)
To me, the song is kind of limiting in itself. Lazy, even. It's not that it's passing along the idea that everyone should or could get along. It makes the assumption that everyone will be open to this vision, and once they are, suddenly all the world's problems will be fixed like magic. It doesn't work that way.

It's nice as a fantasy. Reality, however, says people are stubborn and fucking cray, and it will take a LOT of overcoming differences for 7 billion people to suddenly get along.

Re: religion doesn't always cause conflict

(Anonymous) 2015-12-31 05:18 am (UTC)(link)
...Thank you for pointing that out! Sincerely, a secular Jew.

(Anonymous) 2015-12-31 05:56 am (UTC)(link)
If you say that it says that you also have to say that it says that countries cause every problem and that if we got rid of them etc

(Anonymous) 2015-12-31 08:06 am (UTC)(link)
It does, and is equally naive and daft for that reason too

(Anonymous) 2015-12-31 09:48 am (UTC)(link)
Well yeah but the point is that it wasn't singling religion out and it's silly to pretend that it does.
