A lot of people think that -- "I should just die! All I do is leech resources and make everyone else miserable!" -- because they were raised in toxic environments that reinforced this idea that they were different from other people and not in a good way. So while they would never say such things about anyone else, they apply that sentiment easily to themselves because they were taught to. They were trained and conditioned to think that other people are valuable, but they are not.

This is why one of the first questions a therapist will typically ask an abuse victim is how they would feel if they saw a complete stranger treating somebody the way their abuser treated them. To try and overcome that disconnect of "other people deserve respect and have value, but I don't."
