I'm finally reading the book and I totally agree. Plus, I now realize how old the female cast was, considering the real age of the characters.

i do like the film, but i think it was odd they picked chinese women for the characters and not japanese. but hfdjks the book is so much better, i've read it so many times it looks a bit weathered now ):

I always say that Memoirs fits into my box of "isn't my favourite movie, and actually, I spend a lot of time bitching about it, but, inevitably, I will end up seeing it 294528942 times", because it is SUCH a pretty movie. I've watched the becoming a geisha montage at least 7 times.

I wouldn't mind the nationality thing too much if they bothered to pick actresses that suited the parts aesthetically. I think that they are all beautiful, but slightly off for the roles they are playing. For instance, in the book, Sayuri is described as taller than Hatsumomo and in the movie, she is shorter. Likewise, Mameha has pretty distinct features, such as her small, oval face, which I don't really see in Michelle.

it is a pretty film! and if you forget it is an adaptation it works so well but like the things you mentioned - some things don't quite fit and that is really its biggest fault.
