#26

26. I just recently started making cosplay icons, so I feel I can respond to this argument of yours by brining up my own reasons for deciding to do cosplay icons.

First of all, never in my mind have I ever had the thought to try and convince people that the cosplay icons I've made and use are my own photos. I can't imagine anyone really getting away with that unless they had significant proof that it's them in those photos. All the cosplay icons I've made were done because I thought the cosplayers did an amazing job at portraying their character and I felt like iconing it. It's the same as with regular icons, and with fanart (though there's still a lot of controversy around that which I will bring up later); you say to yourself, "Wow, I love this image. I want to make an icon out of it" and then you do it. The same thing went through my mind when I found the cosplay images. Also note, I make a strong effort to link back to the site that I got the photos from. If I can't find a source, I won't post them.

The only drama and concern I see here is exactly the same as the debate on whether people should be allowed to make icons out of fanart. You know, respecting the artist, copyright issues, what's on the internet stays on the internet and can't be taken back, etc etc.

I can see what you're saying here, though quite honestly I think cosplay icons are far more controversial than fanart icons. There's something inherently different between what you draw and who you are. I'm both a cosplayer and a fanartist, and I don't think i'd mind that much if someone made an icon out of my artwork without permission (in that case, i'd probably just ask for a credit), but i'd be incredibly angry and confused if they made one out of my face. Finding graphics with you in them is a weird feeling, believe me - and it's not a pleasant one as i've experienced it before.

Just because you post links to the cosplayer's site doesn't mean that they've given you permission. Just because "oh, wow, this is a pretty image" doesn't mean you have a right to make it into an icon and then use/post it. Save it to your desktop by all means, but if you do things with it, don't share them publicly.

It's not to do with just respecting the artist in the case of cosplay, it's also about respecting their identity, because a person's face is what identifies them.

That's just my two cents. *shrugs* take it how you will.

I can honestly say that I agree with every little bit of your side of the argument and I won't try to debate you in any way. I mainly wanted to comment on the mentioning of "identity theft", which ticked me off a little. I felt that it was just jumping to conclusions without getting at least a bit of reasoning from the iconer as to why they chose to make cosplay icons in the first place.

There really isn't much that I can expect to happen with issue though, just a lot of talk and debate and no real action, just as with fanart icons. People will still do it for their own justifiable (at least in a way that they feel is justified) reasons and there will be others to question and revolt against those reasons.
