Pay-Walled.

I wouldn't call Raimi a champion of feminism but I also wouldn't claim he's the WORST either. And I don't know that I'd say that he's the exact same person who wrote Evil Dead all those years ago, Ash VS the Evil Dead is really not the same thing even if it is a sequel.

Heck even things that came fairly closely after Evil Dead didn't feel like Evil Dead, Raimi was still early in his career and had a lot to learn.

Actually, it's a serious issue for them, no joke. See the wide-ranging and often extremely bitter debate over blood quantum stuff.

Hi there tumblrhating anon.

I was pretty sure it was supposed to be a lot of blood or something, but it wound up just looking like red paint to me.

No. The movie has a lot of romantic stories, but also looks at love between stepfather and stepson, love between brother and sister, and (this one) love between colleagues (the aging rockstar and his manager).

Specifically: the rockstar walks into the manager's flat near the end, having just left a massive party at Elton John's because he reckons you should spend Christmas with someone you love, and he's just realised that most of his life has been spent with his manager, that his manager is the closest thing he has to a family or best friend, and that the manager is "the fucking love of my life". It's rather sweet.

Jews ARE considered white in America. Do Americans consider hispanic people white?

I love that, it covers so many different styles. I think the best song is Carla's "I'm Dominican" latin number.

Yeah I was pretty confused to begin with, then I actually saw it was a game and it all made sense.

Seeing how many reboots the American movie industriy managed to wreck I don't share your optimism. I can spontaneous think of dozens of European and Asian movies that got remade for America and the results were very... sad to look at.

And excuse me, what do you mean Light's name doesn't sound Japanese? The manga makes it clear that he and his family are Japanese and his name just happens to be an eccentric choice. Several chracters remark how unusual his name is.
But looking at the bigger picture, it's clear the writer chose his name for artistic reasons.

"Everywhere else in the world a Spanish person is white." OK, so there are no Spanish black people or other ethnic minorities, good to know.

I agree about Death Note.

I don't think the story itself is "Japanese", even if the characters happen to be. I think the plot is very universal and could work in most settings. The important elements, I think, are that there is a modern, first-world country, a middle class adolescent boy who is a high achieving genius with a policeman father, who could feel disenchanted with society and crime, but without there actually existing a warzone or something. He has to be withdrawn from most actual crime (Light can't start killing because he's afraid for his life or his family's life, it has to just be idealistic).

While Japan is the setting for that story, it could take place in a number of countries, including the US. It wouldn't change much of anything. I mean, "Shinigami" seems like the only Japanese-ish thing, but that's not even traditional Japanese, and "Death Gods" are perfectly understood worldwide - and the Shinigami world as exists in the manga is hardly Japanese either, nor the designs.

Therefore it'd be perfectly reasonable for a white American to substitute for Light Yagami. Nothing in the story would change. Granted, I don't see any reason why Japanese-Americans couldn't just play the roles instead - it'd be homage to the original characters, and would certainly be believable. Then Light and his family could even keep their original names. Still, I don't think it'd be as racist to cast a white person as it was in, say, the Avatar: The Last Airbender movie, just because in that universe race and culture were so tied together. For that matter, Light wouldn't have to be white, he could be any race, but I think it's important that he comes across as middle-class and personally unaffected by crime.

L is already non-Japanese, though (or perhaps a quarter Japanese, and mostly white, according to one interview) and he's international, so casting him white would not be an issue.

Misa would be an interesting cast. I don't know how popular cutsey sugary pop idols are in the West but you could make her very "alternative", because that's what she is in the original, a very Harajuku girl.

The Japanese Death Note live action movies sucked so hard and I think they failed the casting of all the main characters. Well, Light was okay, though L and Misa sucked, but I thought the Light actor still looked a little too old and not pretty enough.

Trying to get your dollars, what a bunch of Jews.

Re: Jews question

Some! It's a partially overlapping categories. The census asks separate questions (one is a "which race are you" question, and then there's a separate "are you Hispanic or Latino"), and demographic statistics usually treat "White", "Hispanic", and "Non-White Hispanic" as distinct segments to track and provide information about.
