I didn't mind the content, but the narrator's voice is so droning it puts me to sleep.

The only thing I really know about this is that the fandom has insane racewank. Good to know it sucks, too.

Eh, sucks is kind of subjective (as it is with any show/podcast/book/whatever).

I personally love it as a whole, though there are certain episodes that aren't ones that excite me enough where I would listen to them again. I can also see why it wouldn't appeal to some people. It's very out there and not always... linear? I guess is the best way for me to describe it. It also doesn't explain everything and you're either filling in gaps in with your own imagination or hoping it'll pop up again somewhere down the line.

I went to see them live on my birthday and it was definitely worth it to me.

Yeah, at its best it's really good, but it got off to a really slow start. It began just sort of weird and mildly amusing for most of the first year. I almost gave up before I got to "a story about you," which is still my favorite episode, and then "the Sandstorm." The second year was much better, but it really let me down in the final episode of that season. They really pulled it together in the third year.

I definitely consider myself a fan, and I'm glad I stuck with it, but if there hadn't been three years worth of episodes when I got into it, I doubt I'd have kept listening.

Yeah I think I heard one or two episodes while it was still in its first season, went sort of, "Hmm... okay... whatevs..." and walked away, and then came back sometime towards the end of year two and just binge listened and liked it a lot more for some reason.

(Is it bad that 'a story about you' is one episode I DON'T like? XD)

[personal profile] thezmage 2016-01-02 10:38 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't judge, but you are literally the only person I've ever seen who did not like "a story about you." I'll definitely admit that it's primary draw was how different it was from what had, at the time, become a stale format. It doesn't really fit in with the show either as it was or what it became, and if you saw the second year before it I could see how you wouldn't like it.

What about "Cassette?"

Haha, I don't know why I don't like it. Maybe because it 'reads' to me too much like one of those novels where everything is happening to you, and that's not why I like books/WTNV? I like that it's external and about other people.

I like 'Cassette', it was interesting!

(Anonymous) 2016-01-03 05:57 pm (UTC)(link)
I think that's why I don't like it either. I've listened to all the other episodes multiple times, but I've seriously considered deleting "A Story About You" from my ipod.

[personal profile] thezmage 2016-01-03 07:16 pm (UTC)(link)
Okay, if I had interpreted it as actually being about me, I'd have probably felt the same way. Personally, considering the amount of times that "you" die, I just assume that part of the weirdness of Nightvale is that sometimes the radio just up and addresses certain people directly.

That... isn't even what it is though. I mean that element is definitely there, but there's a lot of other themes!

[personal profile] thezmage 2016-01-02 09:56 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah. Like it or not, "Lovecraftian mad libs" is an inaccurate description.

I'm not knowledgeable about HPL, but the creators of WtNV have been pretty adamant that Lovecraft wasn't their main influence.

(Anonymous) 2016-01-03 09:33 am (UTC)(link)
Agreed. And Lovecraft was a racist too, so it fits.

Well, it isn't for everyone, but I always got a kick out of it.

Mind you, I'm way behind (on most everything, not just WTNV. TV, comics, etc), but I was still enjoying it when I left off. It's random as fuck so you have to just roll with it or you aren't going to be satisfied, and often-times things either don't get explained or it takes a long time to get answers, but I guess I don't mind the mystery too much. It kept me curious, and Night Vale is so bizarre that it felt realistic to not always know what was going on.

If you don't take it too seriously I think it's an enjoyable radio show, but you aren't obligated to enjoy it. *shrugs*

(Anonymous) 2016-01-02 10:44 pm (UTC)(link)
It definitely wasn't for me. I really wanted to like it, too.

[personal profile] dratinis 2016-01-02 10:51 pm (UTC)(link)
I wanted to like it, but it just came across to me personally as if the writers were trying too hard to be spooky and weird? I can't quite explain it. I sorta see where you're coming from with the madlibs bit, too.

(Anonymous) 2016-01-03 09:34 am (UTC)(link)
It was trying too hard to be a lovechild of Steve King and Neil Gaiman.

[personal profile] lady_dragoon 2016-01-02 10:58 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh well. More miniature buildings from the Underground City for us, then.

(Anonymous) 2016-01-02 11:05 pm (UTC)(link)
No, that's drabblecast.

(Anonymous) 2016-01-02 11:21 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah I don't give a shit about this series either.
