I think all really depends on who she is aiming her novel at. If she's writing erotica/romance, he can probably get away with mediocre writing as long at the juicy bits are good. if she's attempting literature...ouch.

However, I can tell you one thing: if she can't take criticism and she wants to get published, she's going to have a bad time. An editor will be far less subtle than a friend.

Definitely. Smut in fics I can read like nobody's business. Smut in actual published books? I cringe my way through it.

Seriously. My writing buddy had to talk me off a ledge when my (professional) editor got done eviscerating my novel. She's in for a rude awakening if she manages to sell the thing to a tradtional publisher.

And if she self-pubs and it's terrible, the reviews won't be kind.
