The thing with Carrie isn't that she got old, shockingly that is something people do. The thing is, her drink and drug use is so obvious. She's got that weird sort of paralysis in her cheeks that all alcoholics and substance abusers tend to get if they live long enough. It is so glaringly obvious and there is nothing that can be done to try and mask it. It is something that also seems to be more obvious in women, perhaps because women are expected to be more animated when talking than men; men can get away with it more easily by doing the stoic guy thing.

Carrie the person, yes. It looks rather strange for Carrie as Leia though.

Maybe Leia drank some after her son went dark and Han left? I think that could be believable.

As a person it isn't a problem at all. As an actor... It really restricts her range, and the types of parts she suits. I'm very sad to say that without massive unpleasant reveals, like after Han left and Ben went dark Leia turned to drink and drugs to cope, it doesn't work with the character of Leia. It is a thing that restricts her range, not something that anyone should be ashamed about.
