I'd just tell them what the issue is. Surely your friends would understand? Especially if you're willing to do it just to be social, but you'll be fooling around on your phone or reading a book while they watch?

Depends on the friends tbh. I know my friends would mock me for it. Not in a cruel way, but I just don't like that kind of attention when I'm crying.
