And yeah, for 'younger' authors (ie, those who haven't yet learned that a critique isn't a personal attack), I've found the best way to approach being a beta is exactly what anon described - grammar, spelling, and formatting first, blatant plot/fact errors second. Once that's been handled, then you can move on to the other things like style and characterization.
If you know of published works in the same vein as what your friend's writing, perhaps suggest it to her as something she might enjoy?
Otherwise...as other commenters have said, your friend is going to have a horrible time if she actually wants to get this published. Editors don't have time to spare authors' feelings, and the readers will just keep piling their opinions on, good AND bad. Either your friend will learn that part of being an author is looking forward to having your soul ripped out by a pack of hungry editors, or she won't learn that and she'll go back to writing how she likes. Which isn't necessarily a bad thing, but reality can hit some people hard. And unfortunately you may just have to sit on the sidelines and watch that happen.
Or she may burn out before she even reaches that point. Who knows.
Whatever happens, good luck to both of you.
