What don't you like about the people in fandom?

(Anonymous) 2016-01-04 12:24 am (UTC)(link)
Your time to shine by giving other nerds a wedgie.

It frustrates me how single focus people can be in fandom and how little they try to expand their tastes, I guess.

It's been discussed with fanfiction today, but I think a lot of fanart suffers some from it too. There's a lot of fanarts that you can just tell haven't drawn something from real life.

(Though some of fanart has a sort of "outsider art" vibe too. imo some really creative techniques and styles came from the lower spec art programs (ms paint, oekakis, and the like.)

+1. There's just too much insularity in fandom which normalizes all fanworks into things that look just like every other thing everyone else produces.

The same thing happens in writers' workshops, so it's not just a fandom phenomenon, but fandom is extra insular, so the effect is even greater.

I don't like people who tend to see themselves as okay or cool fandomers and everyone else as just weird nerds.

So basically people with OP's outlook.

How socially awkward and unhygienic some of them can be.

I understand that depression is pretty rampant, but I'd like to go to cons without feeling like my nose is smushed into an armpit the whole time.

And a little awkwardness is expected, but please don't ask actors about their sex lives.

This is bringing back memories of the cons I've gone to.

Word. I think of myself as a somewhat socially awkward person, but...idk, I still have boundaries? I've had more than one costume ruined due to "glomping", and I've been more or less sexually assaulted in the middle of a hotel lobby by a girl I've never met who was cosplaying the other half of a popular OTP for my cosplay. (She was offended that I wasn't getting into it, too...)

Not to mention the smell, yeah. Con funk is a truly horrifying beast.

I honestly can't believe this needs to be said, but I shouldn't be surprised. Just...how do people think that's a totally okay thing to do?

How blindly possessive people are of their ships, to the degree that if you admit to not liking their ship, they take that to mean that you think it's bad and they're bad people for liking it, and you are forever known as the [shipname]-hater.

Seen it a lot. Experienced it a few times. Looking forward to it in the next fandom where I don't ship the main pairing.

I love all of the blushing and giggling that goes on.

Also my favorite Steve interpretation is "Captain America, Sex God". Yes, Steve not only knows everything about regular sex, but about gay sex too! He's so suave!!

and the way everyone seems to think, talk and have the same tastes as a 19-year-old girl from anytown USA.

Eh, that doesn't bother me so much - both in general (it's a female fantasy, I'm not going to get mad about it being constructed in that way) and also specifically with Captain America, because, like, Captain America can do anything. He's just the best.

oh god yes, this.

I completely agree with this (though I'm not sure it's only slash writers who do it. There are plenty of het fics where the men don't really act like your average adult male either).

It goes both ways, arguably hypocritically so. When I agree with part of the story's message, I get frustrated with fic that modifies, negates, or tears down that message in favor of a conflicting one. When I disagree with part of a story's message, I actually get frustrated with fic that accepts and promotes it!

I'm more interested in what other people in fandom dislike about me, lol.

I'm just kidding. I actually rather enjoy your comments here on this comm.

a super late reply, but.

Re: What don't you like about the people in fandom?

I think it's stupid and a little annoying when people make fluffy fanart/hypothetic scenarios ("Imagine Blank and Blank going to PTA meetings") for fucked up couples, even if I ship them.
I also think it's annoying when fans stan for unpopular characters just BECAUSE they're unpopular (how contrary).
Anything "cult of celebrity" is annoying, like the whole "flawless"/"flaw-free"/"queen of everything" terminology. It grates on my nerves.

How elitist some pricks can be about one small sect of a fandom. Because clearly Gen 1 Pokemon was the only Pokemon that mattered or G1 MLP is the ONLY MLP that's any good, or "IF IT'S NOT G1 OR ANIMATED IT'S SHIT AND YOU SHOULD GET OUT OF THE TRANSFORMERS FANDOM".

I wish those types of people would just get the fuck out of fandom permanently.

Re: What don't you like about the people in fandom?

(Anonymous) 2016-01-04 03:39 am (UTC)(link)
As someone who grew up on G1 MLP, no one in the world should say it's any good. It was a terrible kids show about candy colored ponies with the purpose of selling toys. Mission accomplished, though, because I had a giant trunk of the things.

I know right? (The sad part is...a neighbor-friend of mine IS the person that I keep hearing that part from. That it's the only one that matters and that FIM is the worst thing that ever happened and anyone who likes it sucks.)
