And a lot of those classes are taught by self-published hacks who are only there to pick up the student they find hottest.

Mine was taught by a very nice young gay man who was a writer himself and helped me a lot. I'm sure there are negative experiences like yours, but I wouldn't discount workshops or writing courses based purely on those negative experiences, since everyone's situations aren't the same.
