I agree it's got a time and place. It's just that in my experience, fic in present tense that I've encountered reads like Tumblr SJW posts with dialogue tags.

I think that's hugely fandom and pairing dependent. Most of the fic for my OTP is in present tense, and exactly none of it is social justice-y. This is probably because it's a controversial/problematic pairing, so all of the SJW types are off complaining about how awful it is instead of writing it.

Those kinds of stories are incredibly cringey, I agree. I can't stand it when people use random characters as a mouthpiece for their opinions...
