He surprised me because he wasn't at all what I expected Adam Driver-as-a-Star-Wars-villain to be (even though I actually expected the character to be bit of a lulzy wannabe).

I mean, I think Adam Driver himself has a more intimidating aura (and yeah, I know it's because he's shy) than Kylo does. And he doesn't even *look* like Adam Driver, really. All I saw was the character, and that takes some amazing acting.

So yeah, if someone thought he looked wrong or wasn't intimidating enough - surprise, that was the point. His scariness comes from the "incredible power given to a dude who is a completely unpredictable mess and pretty much has no idea what he's doing" aspect.
