I think it might be a recent change. But if you look at what's become big in the last couple years, and the way f/f fandom seems to be heading, it is starting to focus a lot more on canon ships. That is what seems to be blowing up - where it's something that's either canonical or at least actually subtextual, not something read into the work by fans.

It is not an iron rule but ime it is a tendency that definitely does exist.
