Poor people buy expensive things all the time. The difference is, they save up for it and it's a huge deal for them to have something nice to wear/own/etc. whereas rich people just buy it and throw it away next season.

Big spenders buy things and throw them away next season, regardless of class. A lot more rich people can afford to be big spenders but a lot of those rich big spenders don't stay rich long: see lotto winners going bankrupt all the time. Unless they're saudi princes.
