Second generation Chinese-American here. I've had to explain to white people that no, I really am American even though I look the way I do. Yes, it's very possible to be of Chinese descent but still 100% an American citizen because "Chinese" is my ethnicity, and "American" is not an ethnicity, it's a nationality. No, being Chinese doesn't automatically make you a citizen of China. Yes, my English is quite good, that's because I was born and raised in the U.S. my whole life. No, I've never actually been to China. Not even once.

These people meant well, or at least most of them did. They had no idea they were being racist as hell, and I wasn't going to tell them but those conversations were agonizingly long and so dumb I came away several dozen IQ points lower than when I started.
