Well women traditionally are more creator types, and we also put a lot more emphasis on social and group cohesion, which creates fan communities on which the emphasis is placed on a gift-economy of self-created items (look at stuff like quilting or knitting or baking circles for historical/RL equivalent).

Boys, on the other hand, are socialized to put less value on a cooperative group and are also socialized to be a lot more aggressive, leading to a clear situation in which they just fight with each other constantly about stupid details (wankery over sports teams, cars, etc).

I'd say both groups probably have same levels of aggression towards each other, women just sublimate it into non-confrontational forms more than guys, and they have more to do when they're not being fighting.

Oh look! it's f!s!

But in all due seriousness, I have to agree. Coming from the same fandom as the OP, I really can't stand the majority of the (male-dominate) fandom. Maybe partly because they deny the slash that is so obvious. Their discussions tend to be picking on minute details of the canon as opposed to, "HAY, what if this had happened instead? What do you think Griffith might have been thinking at the time? LOL, I ship it so hard."

hahaha I'd counter that f!s, while wanky and bitchy as hell, is also ostensibly a place to be so anonymously, which is by definition less confrontational ;)
