Sorry, but it's a pet peeve of mine; we all have our interpretations, but none of them can be proved (well, except that he cares about all his friends, of course).
In my mind, both Aeris and Tifa are sort of mother figures to him, but a few years back I shipped them (Cloud/Aeris, and then Cloud/(Tifa). Nowadays I ship Cloud with Vincent (And Aeris with Zack; I have no ship for Tifa at the moment). My preferences have changed back and forth over the years, and I like the way a case can be made for pretty much any pairing in this game.
Heh, sorry, just felt the need to ramble a bit!

Despite my icon, it wasn't shipping bias that made me call out the OP's secret--it was because of the reasons I stated above.
No need to apologize, it's perfectly true. While I do believe that they left a ton of signs concerning Cloud and Aerith, until they just come out and say it (like they did with Cid/Shera), everyone is allowed to come to their conclusions on their own. :)
Hell, I'm rather partial to Aerith/Tifa myself...;D

He does call her "mother" that one time... was that the part you don't count? I could argue that he feels her presence and hears her voice, and connects that to the feeling of a mother. (Does Zack do that? I've not played the new games yet, only the original, and seen AC; in which one is it?)
I still think Cloud/Aerith culd work perfectly well; it just needs a little buildup, just like all the other pairings. It's already canon that he cares about her very much, and that they have a special connection - to build a romance from there should be easy!

It's got a sizable amount of buildup, esp. if you look at the, uh...side games (Itadaki Street comes to mind. XD), but in the actual canon, it's fairly ambiguous. Kinda. (Though the novella plainly states that Aerith loves Cloud. Way more than she ever loved Zack, actually. =o)
As far as I've heard, Zack does the same thing as Cloud--in fact, a lot of Zack/Aerith moments in CC are rip-offs of scenes that happened between Cloud and Aerith in the original game. Crisis Core does a lot of things that piss off a lot of people. Like make Gackt the real bad guy instead of Sephiroth. Or something. XD

Wow, really? It's sort of sad in a way. Though good for the Cloud/Aeris ship, I suppose!
My only real ship now is Vincent/Cloud, but that's not because of any subtext in canon; I just find their personalities an interesting combination, and their situation in AC made me want to see more interaction between them. But I hear Vincent has moved on now, after Dirge (i should really play that game as well...)
Crisis Core does a lot of things that piss off a lot of people.
I've started it, but I haven't had much time to play, lately. I'm not happy about the Gackt thing, but I want to see it before i judge it.

I do agree, I was really happy to see how Cloud and Vincent interacted in AC--those two have always had very strong parallels, and the creators made sure to emphasize this in Advent Children. The scene that always gets me though is Marlene hiding in Vincent's cape. XD
Good luck with Crisis Core--you're going to see a bunch of highly familiar scenes. One good thing I do note in its favor is that Zack is hilarious. Srsly--summon cactuar, you'll see what I mean. XD
