It...doesn't sound like he was trying to be rude? When most people talk about fictional "love children" it's *usually* in the context of appearance. Sounds more to me like he was used to your being self-deprecating or something and was shooting THAT down.

Exactly. No one says, "This dude is the lovechild of these two because he is so brave and smart!"

It is because he looks similar to both of them.

DA. I use the term for both people who look alike and people with similar characteristics.

There are times when I would assume it's about looks and times when I would assume it's about personality. With Hermione and Luna I would assume personality. I don't know if I have any hard rules for why that is but that's just the feeling I get.

"No offense, but..." is not a good way to start a sentence if you're not trying to be rude.

nayrt

When I read it, I initially took the "no offense, but" as him shooting down her idea, not a negative comment on her looks, but more of a "you're wrong" in general.

However, on re-read, with OP talking about him making a "rude contrast", I'm guessing he's saying OP is not gorgeous enough to be their lovechild.

That was my take on it too, only I'd clarify that he's still shooting down her idea, but his reasoning for why OP couldn't be their lovechild is her looks. So basically yeah, there's no way that isn't a rude thing to say.

Huh, most of the time when I hear about lovechildren it's not appearance based, it's personality. Like "Doctor Beckett is like Scotty and Bones's lovechild"

(Anonymous) 2016-01-07 01:50 am (UTC)(link)
That's how I use it and see it used most of the time.

I love that reference forever.
