Kylo Ren (TFA spoilers)

I was going to make a secret about how I didn't like the casting for Kylo Ren but then there was this whole thread the other day about people not understanding the deep choices or whatever, and how he's so perfect and his hair is perfect or something like that.

So I won't make the secret because the ship has sailed, but I still don't like the casting. He wasn't an "attractive" evil, he wasn't even a "banal" evil, or a "everyman's" evil. I just found him 100% meh, and I think he should have kept the mask on the entire film and gone into these issues in the next one. Too much storyline clutter.

And I love long hair on guys but his hair was meh. Everything was meh.

driveby here and i haven't seen/been in any star wars fandom but kylo just came off as a whinier much less charismatic version of mcu loki to me. i laughed the whole time he was whining at his dad, and i really shouldn't have been.

Congratulations, that's the point of the character. He's an edgelord trying too hard to be cool and ~dark and edgy~ and failing miserably because he's just a dumb manchild.

Great, and imo this makes for an uninteresting character and I did not particularly enjoy him on my screen. Good to know it was ~on purpose~ though.

Da, but it is on purpose. JJ said he's a young person who had too much potential and didn't know what to do about it, so he got taken advantage of. He even knows that Vader is Anakin-and doesn't give a fuck because he thinks Anakin the jedi was his grandfather's 'bad career move' and he got 'seduced' by the enemy (Luke) at the end. He's an insecure, whiny, brat. He's not a 'complete' villain. Hell, Adam Driver said his lightsaber is even supposed to look shitty and cobbled together, because that's who he basically is as a character.

See, I like all of this in theory, but onscreen he just didn't work for me. Maybe it really boils down to the issue with having too many issues present in the movie so none of them got enough attention. Maybe it was that I saw too much of the movie coming (since it was a A New Hope redux), and Han's death especially.

Plus he's 29 years old. It's not that he's an edgy teen, he's literally a manchild.

His teeth really bother me. They're just... not good. But yeah, when that mask came off, I was not impressed at all.

He still has two more movies to develop into, so maybe you will find something you like about him later on?

Honestly I wasn't sure how I felt about him at first but after viewing the movie again, I think it was a daring idea with an interesting actor.

He seems to have a natural goofiness and is great at comedy, which makes him a strange choice for a villain especially in such an iconic movie. To me, they decided to make a character that would grow into the role rather than try to outdo Darth Vader because they knew that just wasn't possible to achieve right off the bat. Which, was the smart choice imo.

Well, I definitely didn't hate him or anything, so we'll see. I hope I'll come to enjoy the character!

I think my general disappointment in the plot has kind of colored my perceptions of the movie, for now. But I am curious as to where they'll take him.
