Re: Can we have a gender general thread?

Fuck no. It's fun. It's both how and why I'm a geek. My geek cred has been hard won, and every failed headbutting of geekery makes me a more knowledgeable geek. Why wouldn't I want to have passionate arguments about something I love? Why would anyone who loves a thing not want to take every opportunity to show off and share that love with his fellow geeks? It's what geek culture has always been about. Every scrap of fandom exists only through the brownian motion of geeks bashing into other geeks and arguing which one of them truly understands how Warp drives work and shit like that. It's not territorial. This is the thing a certain branch of modern geeks don't seem to get. They attribute it to a "Boys only club" and talk about it like marking your territory by pissing all over the place like animals (Do people not ever get tired of comparing guys to animals?) It's not "I live here, You're not as good as me. Fuck off out, you're not welcome" it's "I live here, I know THIIIIIIIS Much. Come at me bros I'm ready to play"

I'm not saying it can't be fun (for you it obviously is), but for many others it's... not

and like you said, that kinda geekery is not exhibited by modern fans
many of whom happen to be girls

so the next time you think a girl can't take it, consider what kinda nerd environment they're used to (or more accurately, since you don't put much weight in "boys only club", what kinda nerd environment they've chosen to be a part of) and don't be surprised if they don't wanna be quizzed
