Sort of yeah. It's not considered odd for adults to read manga, which is why it's able to have such high sales. Obviously... certain manga would be seen as odd for an adult to read, but no one is going to think much of seeing a guy reading Attack on Titan on the train. There are some anime this applies to as well; anime that airs in prime time on network television that are popular among childrens/adults/families. I had a friend who explained to me that during the early 2000s at her office, it was normal for Inuyasha to be a 'water cooler' discussion series, for example.

In addition some series have had crossover appeal, to the point that even though they began as really niche, they've expanded into more general popularity. Love Live is a recent example of this. While it's not like your average person is going to know all nine members of Muse, it's big enough that it now reairs on Disney channel and was featured on Kohaku Uta Gassen, a very mainstream concert that occurs on New Year's. Evangelion, since you mentioned it, has also expanded past just an otaku audience.
