I'm not keen on having River as a companion, but an alien, yeah. Anybody but another hot young chick, because I can't stand what Moffat does with characters like that.

"pessts, Steven, your kinks are showing."

Right? I have nothing against the actresses but I can't watch because it feels like I'm watching some sad middle aged man's sci-fi sex fantasy.

Honestly, I've liked all the companions they've had, pretty much. The problem with the show right now for me is the mode of storytelling, not the characterization really. Certainly not the companions.

I think the only new companions that could get me watching regularly again would be an alien companion or River. Maybe a companion from far, far in the future.

I will keep watching either way, but I concur that repeatedly having companions from our time is the most boring option.

I have an elaborate mental plan for how the next companion has to be Ace McShane, who's still around out there someplace refusing to "grow up", whatever that means. She's thrilled to see the Doctor again, but regrets that she can't go off with him and abandon her two kids. Fine, says the Doctor, bring them along.

So the series becomes about these two weird, energetic kids (I'm thinking a teenage girl and her younger brother) who have never seen the inside of a school, learning about time and space and the universe with their punk-as-fuck mom and badass crazy grandpa. Of course, the Doctor may have a secret agenda behind some of the trips he's taking them on, or reasons why he wants them to learn certain lessons...

There are no words for how much I would love this to happen.

According to Sarah Jane (the Sarah Jane adventures ep the death of the Doctor) Ace set up a charity called "a charitable earth." She's living somewhere on Earth and could conceivably become a companion again. Capaldi wants Susan Foreman.

I would love River to be the next companion. As much as I shipped her with 11, they worked best together in small doses. But Kingston and Capaldi had so much chemistry in the Christmas special. I would love to see River and 12 traveling together. Not necessarily anything romantic because I think 12 is mostly asexual. Just the two of them traveling, snarking at each other.

I've liked most of the companions they've had, but a companion from a different world or one from the distant future would be pretty sweet. Actually, I'd love to see a long-term companion from the past, like the Victorian era, just to see how they would react and acclimate themselves to all the shenanigans they'll stumble upon with the Doctor.

Nah. The Brig, ever and always. I realise we can never see the likes of Nicholas Courtney again, but WW2-era Alistair? Bring it on.

The new show is established enough for DW to do something companion wise other than young, 21st century earth woman.

(Anonymous) 2016-01-09 01:09 am (UTC)(link)
But they won't.

I don't think its position was ever so tenuous where they had to cast eye candy for the companion. Certainly not past the first two seasons. It's just the easy, safe choice, especially after RTD decided to inject such a strong romance element into the series.

I want Donna or Martha back! I can't stand River - no idea why, something about her irritates me.

Apparently Moffatt's started looking for his successor as well...

I've liked all the companions so far, and I definitely will keep watching the show regardless, but I too would love an alien companion or a far future companion. Or someone from the past! Just someone not from contemporary earth!

I'm not sure what would get me watching again. (I'm behind too, and don't like returning to a series without catching up first, even if I don't particularly like or care about what was missed. So I'll have to be pretty compelled to come back, I think.)

An alien companion would be incredible, but I don't think the show would ever go that route. If nothing else I bet the costume and/or special effects would be time consuming and/or expensive, and it's simply easier to have human companions. That and the show has a history of pretty, young female companions... (Edited to add: not that aliens can't be pretty, but if TPTB want to appeal to the widest amount of people, they probably assume that's humans.) That entices some people to tune in as well. (Plus, The Doctor seems to have a bit of a soft spot for humans, so I guess that factors into it as well... But probably not as much as the time/money.)

I would love an alien companion, though. Or even Missy, though again, def not expecting that.

I am all for companions from different planets and times. It's one of the things I miss most about the classic series. Zoe, Jamie, Leela, Turlough, Nyssa, Romana. I mean, I don't think I'd want another Time Lord, but an alien, yes. The new series has been running long enough, and has a budget and effects the classic series could only have dreamt of. They can afford to branch out a bit again.

Let me tell you, I was super excited when Clara was first introduced (or second introduced?) and I thought we were going to get a companion from the Victorian era.

(Anonymous) 2016-01-09 03:57 am (UTC)(link)
Classic and genius Moffat misdirection.

(Anonymous) 2016-01-09 10:10 am (UTC)(link)
A male companion would be good just to mix things up a bit. The last few (with the exception of Jack maybe) have just been companion love interest but would like strong male character that isn't the doctor!

I want a male companion, Rory was great.

(Anonymous) 2016-01-09 05:48 pm (UTC)(link)
Would love to see more River with Twelve.
